Heritage timber shutters supplied UK‑wide
Heritage timber interior shutters supplied UK‑wide by Barnsbury Joinery. Victorian‑style panelled and louvred shutters, made to measure in timber and finish to order.
Barnsbury Joinery supplies heritage timber interior shutters to order, delivered to homes and projects across the United Kingdom. Made in our London studio to your window measurements, our shutters carry the proportions, panel detail and louvre profiles that suit period properties, from Victorian and Georgian terraces to Edwardian villas and later heritage homes.
This is a supply‑only service for customers outside London and the South East. We manufacture your shutters to measure, finish them to your specification and dispatch them for installation by your own joiner or fitter. Within London and the South East we also offer a full service, including survey, restoration and fitting, but this page covers our made‑to‑measure supply available across the rest of the UK.
Victorian‑style panelled and louvred shutters

Our heritage range covers the two classic shutter styles found in British period homes. Panelled shutters use solid, flat or raised timber panels framed by stiles and rails, echoing the joinery of the doors and dado in a traditional interior. They give a clean, architectural look and excellent light control when closed, and they suit rooms where you want the calm of a solid panel rather than an adjustable slat.
Louvred shutters use angled timber slats held within a frame, allowing you to tilt the louvres for daylight and privacy without opening the shutters fully. They are well suited to bathrooms, bay windows and any room where you want to filter light through the day. Many customers combine the two, for example solid panels to the lower window and louvres above, so we build to whatever mix your rooms call for.
Every set is drawn to the proportions of your windows so the shutters read as part of the original architecture rather than an off‑the‑shelf addition. Stile widths, rail depths and louvre sizes are chosen to sit correctly within period reveals and mouldings.
Box, folding and tier configurations

We supply shutters in the configurations traditionally used in British houses. Box, or boxing, shutters fold back into the window reveal or a purpose‑made shutter box beside the window, a detail common in Georgian and Victorian rooms where the shutters were designed to disappear against the wall when open. Where the original boxing survives, we can build panels to work with it, and where it does not, we can supply panels designed to fold neatly against the reveal.
Folding, or bi‑fold, configurations use hinged panels that concertina back to one or both sides of the window, which is a practical choice for wider windows and bays. Tier‑on‑tier and café-style arrangements are also available, giving you independent control of upper and lower sections so you can keep the lower half closed for privacy while the top stays open to the light.
We will recommend the configuration that suits your window size, reveal depth and the period of the property, then manufacture the frames and panels to fit.
Timber and finish options

Shutters are made in quality timber selected for stability and a fine painted or natural finish. We offer a choice of species suited to interior joinery, including options with a close, even grain that takes paint beautifully and options where a visible grain and natural finish are preferred.
For finishes you can specify a factory‑applied paint in a colour of your choice, including heritage and period palettes, or a stained and clear‑lacquered finish where you want the timber grain to show. Hinges, knobs, tilt rods and shutter bars can be selected to match the style of the room, from discreet modern ironmongery to traditional heritage patterns.
Because everything is made to order, you are not limited to a standard range of sizes or colours. We build to your specification so the finished shutters match your interior scheme and the character of the property.
Measuring and made‑to‑order supply

Accurate measurements are the foundation of a well‑fitting shutter, so our supply service is built around measurements you or your fitter provide. We issue clear measuring guidance covering reveal depth, width and height at multiple points, out‑of‑square allowances and any obstructions such as window furniture, tiles or radiators, so the panels arrive ready to fit.
Once we have your measurements and specification confirmed, we manufacture the shutters to order in our London studio. Each set is made for your specific openings rather than cut down from stock, which is what gives heritage shutters their close, considered fit within period reveals.
If you are unsure about measuring a tricky bay or an out‑of‑square opening, we are happy to talk it through before you commit to an order.
Delivery and installation by others

We supply heritage timber shutters UK‑wide and arrange delivery to your address or project site. Panels are protected for transit and dispatched with the ironmongery and fixing components needed for installation.
This is a supply‑only service, so installation is carried out by others. Your own joiner, carpenter or fitter completes the hanging and final adjustment on site, working to the fitting notes we provide with each order. If you are within London or the South East and would prefer us to survey and fit the shutters as part of a full service, please ask and we will direct you to the right option.
Delivering the components rather than a fitting team is what allows us to offer made‑to‑measure heritage shutters to customers well beyond our London base while keeping the joinery to studio standard.
Lead times

Because each order is made to measure, lead times depend on the size of the order, the configuration and the finish specified. As a general guide, a straightforward set of panels in a standard finish will be quicker to produce than a large tier‑on‑tier order in a bespoke colour.
We confirm a production and delivery timescale in writing when your measurements and specification are agreed, so you know when to have your fitter ready.
To begin, request a survey if you are in London or the South East, or send us your window measurements for a made‑to‑measure supply quotation anywhere else in the UK.
