Timber has been used to make windows and doors in this country for centuries, and there are good reasons it has never really been bettered. Well seasoned hardwood and softwood, worked by hand and finished properly, is repairable, adaptable and quietly beautiful in a way that modern replacements struggle to match. When a sash window has stood for a hundred years or more, the sensible thing is almost always to conserve what is there, replacing only what has genuinely failed.

That philosophy runs through all of our work. Our makers are trained in traditional techniques, from cutting and fitting new sash sections and splicing in fresh timber where rot has taken hold, to re‑cording, re‑weighting and re‑balancing windows so they glide as they were designed to. We use materials chosen to suit the age and setting of each building, and we take the time to get details right, because those details are what separate a repair that lasts a generation from one that fails within a few years.

For our bespoke sash windows in London, we begin every commission from the existing architecture. Sight lines, glazing bars, horns, mouldings and paint finishes are all considered so that new joinery sits comfortably alongside the old. The aim is never to announce itself. Done well, our work simply looks as though it has always been there, which is exactly how heritage joinery should feel.

If a window can be repaired, we will say so, because conserving original joinery is almost always better for the building, better for the environment and better value over the life of the property. When replacement genuinely is the right answer, we explain why and set out the options clearly.

The third is expertise. Period and listed buildings come with their own rules, quirks and sensitivities, and knowing how to work within them takes years to build. Our team understands traditional construction, conservation principles and the practical realities of working in occupied homes and busy buildings. That expertise is what allows us to take on demanding projects with confidence and to leave every one of them better than we found it.

Our London studio and the areas and clients we serve

Our studio is based at Low Profile House, 94 Vale Road, London N4 1PZ. This is where our team works and where our joinery is made, and it gives us an ideal base for serving period properties right across the capital. From here we work throughout London and out into the South East, covering areas from Islington, Camden, Westminster and Kensington to the outer boroughs and the surrounding home counties.

The properties we look after are as varied as London itself, from single Georgian and Victorian terraced houses to substantial townhouses, mansion blocks, and buildings within conservation areas and on the listed register. We are used to the particular demands of heritage settings, including the requirements that come with listed building consent and conservation area controls, and we work sympathetically within them.

Over the years we have carried out work on properties within some of London's most significant estates, including buildings connected to the Crown Estate and the Grosvenor Estate, where the standard expected is exacting and the tolerance for anything less is nil.
