Bespoke timber sash windows supplied UK‑wide
Bespoke timber sash windows supplied UK‑wide by Barnsbury Joinery. Made to measure in our London studio, delivered nationwide for you or your contractor to install.
Barnsbury Joinery makes bespoke timber sash windows to order and supplies them across the whole of the United Kingdom. Every window is drawn, cut and assembled to your exact sizes in our studio at Low Profile House, 94 Vale Road of north London, then packed and delivered to your address ready for you or your own contractor to install. It is the same joinery we fit ourselves on projects in London and the South East, offered on a supply‑only basis so that homeowners, architects, builders and contractors anywhere in the country can specify our windows without needing us on site.
We have been building sash windows since 1987, and Barnsbury Joinery is the flagship London studio of The Barnsbury Group. That heritage matters when a window has to sit correctly in a period reveal, run smoothly on its cords, and match the sightlines of the originals it replaces. This page explains how our supply‑only service works, the timber and glazing options available, and how we make windows suitable for conservation areas and listed buildings, so you can decide whether supply and deliver is the right route for your project.
Made to measure from your survey

Every supply‑only order begins with accurate measurements. For projects in London and the South East we can carry out the survey ourselves as part of our full service, but for supply‑only work across the rest of the UK the measurements come from you or your contractor. We provide clear guidance on how to measure each opening, what to record, and the photographs and details we need to build a window that fits first time.
From those figures we produce made‑to‑measure sash windows to your exact sizes and specification. We match the box frame depth, the sash thickness, the glazing bar layout and the profile of the mouldings so the finished windows read correctly against the rest of the building. Nothing is stock. Each set is drawn for your openings, which is why supply‑only from a specialist studio gives a far better result than an off‑the‑shelf unit trimmed to fit.
Because the fit depends entirely on the survey information supplied, we ask that measurements are checked carefully before production begins. We are happy to review your figures and flag anything that looks unusual before we cut timber.
Timber options and finishes

We build in slow‑grown, sustainably sourced timber selected for stability and longevity. Accoya is our recommended choice for most exposed situations because of its exceptional resistance to movement and rot, and its very long service life once painted. European redwood and engineered redwood are available where budget or specification calls for them, and we can work in hardwoods such as sapele or oak on request for stained or clear‑finished windows.
Windows can be supplied primed ready for you to finish on site, or fully factory finished in the colour of your choice. A factory‑applied, microporous paint or stain system gives the most durable and even finish, applied under controlled conditions before the glass and ironmongery go in. Tell us the colour reference you need and we will match it.
Ironmongery is part of the specification too. We can supply period‑appropriate sash fasteners, lifts, pulls and restrictors in a range of finishes so the details match the age and character of the property rather than looking newly added.
Glazing options including slimline double glazing

Glazing is where a sash window can be quietly brought up to modern standards without losing its character. We offer slimline double glazing units engineered specifically for traditional sashes, with narrow sightlines that sit within period glazing bars where thicker modern units simply will not fit. This gives you the thermal and acoustic benefit of double glazing while keeping the delicate proportions of the original.
For conservation areas and listed buildings we also offer single glazing with genuine or applied glazing bars, and we can specify conservation‑grade or restoration glass with a subtle texture that reads correctly in period elevations. Where planning conditions allow, slimline double glazing is often the best balance of performance and appearance.
We can advise on the right glazing for your situation as part of the specification, but the final choice will usually be guided by any conservation or planning requirements attached to your property. Tell us what those are and we will build to suit.
Draught sealing and traditional cords, weights or spiral balances

Every window we supply is draught sealed. Discreet brush or compression seals are integrated into the frame and meeting rail so the finished sash closes tightly against the weather while still sliding freely. Good draught sealing is one of the single biggest improvements you can make to comfort and running costs in a period property, and it is built in rather than added afterwards.
On the mechanism you have a genuine choice. We can supply traditional counterbalanced sashes running on cords and cast weights in the box frame, which is the correct approach for most restorations and for listed work where the original method must be retained. Alternatively we can fit modern spiral balances, which remove the need for a weight box and can be useful in new frames or where wall depth is limited.
We will recommend the mechanism that suits your windows and your setting, and specify it clearly on the order so the finished sashes operate exactly as intended.
Suitability for conservation areas and listed buildings

A large part of our work involves properties in conservation areas and buildings that are listed, so our windows are designed to satisfy the scrutiny that comes with them. We reproduce historic sightlines, section sizes, glazing bar profiles and mouldings so that replacements are faithful to the originals, and we can supply drawings and specifications to support a planning or listed building consent application.
Because our windows are drawn individually and built by hand, we can match unusual proportions, curved heads, margin lights and other period details that mass production cannot accommodate. This is what makes made‑to‑measure joinery the sensible route for sensitive buildings.
If your project is subject to conservation area or listed building controls, share the relevant conditions or your conservation officer's requirements with us and we will build to meet them.
How supply‑only works, delivery and lead times

Supply‑only is straightforward. You provide the survey measurements and specification, we confirm the design and quote, you place the order, and we build your windows in our London studio. When they are complete we pack them carefully and deliver them to you or your contractor nationwide, ready to install. Full service including survey, restoration, repair and fitted installation remains available in London and the South East, while supply‑only made‑to‑measure joinery is how we serve the rest of the UK.
Installation is carried out by you or your chosen contractor. We can provide fitting guidance and specification notes so that whoever installs the windows sets them correctly, balances the sashes and finishes the reveals to a proper standard. Our responsibility is to deliver joinery that is accurate, well made and ready to fit.
Lead times depend on the size of the order, the timber and finish specified, and current studio capacity. We will confirm a realistic build and delivery schedule when we quote. Delivery coverage, carriage and packaging are confirmed with your quotation, which we will share before you place your order.
When you are ready to begin, request a survey or send us your measurements and specification and we will prepare a detailed quotation for your bespoke timber sash windows, supplied UK‑wide.
